Roger McCleery started writing at school in the 50’s in the Wynburg Boys High School magazine on motorcycle racing – mainly the Isle of Man TT.   He wrote for the Cape Times whilst still at school, and wanted to be a car reporter on the Cape Argus but had to wait six months for the next intake so joined the bank, which everybody was doing in those days.
 
Five years later  Roger jointed Caltex in the Transport Department. He wrote car and motorcycle road tests in the only other motoring magazine in the country other than Car Magazine, for Caltex.  Roger then joined Midmacor as the first employee of Honda Motorcycles in South Africa after the MD and General Manager, to concentrate on the importation and distribution of Honda motorcycles in South Africa.
 
He wrote all technical bulletins, handbooks and news releases and found new dealers all over South Africa, and ran the Honda Motorcycle Racing Team. After 12 years at Honda, Roger joined Alfa Romeo as PR and went on to be the Marketing Manager responsible for the racing team. He wrote motor sport releases and had a motoring programme on Radio 5 talking about motorcycles.
 
Along side writing a motorcycle column on Motor Sport for The Star, Roger joined Nissan as Sales Manager, and wrote on motor sport for The Sunday Times.
 
In 1985 he formed Motoring Media Promotions – a PR Agency.

Roger has been a motor sport commentator since 1965 – started at Killarney Circuit and then spread all over the country. He broadcast on SABC Radio from 1969, and gave race reports on SAFM for 15 years. His first live TV broadcast on motor sport at Kyalami was in 1976. Since then he have done live and recorded TV broadcasts on Moto-Cross, Off-road Racing, Rallying, Road Racing, Grands Prix – cars and motorcycles, and Speedway. For 12 years, Roger has a motoring programme on 5FM or Radio 5 as it was known then, as well as Radio Cani and Smart FM.  His show on Radio 2000 @ 1½ hours was longest motoring programme in the world for 12 years. Roger's programme on Highveld extended to 10 years.
 
Roger wrote or currently writes columns for Automotive Refinishers, Auto Insight, Classic Car Africa, The Star, aBr, Cars in Action, Drive and various motorcycle magazines. He has chaired Moto-Cross and Motorcycle commissions at MSA for 17 years, during which time he brought two-wheeler Grands Prix to South Africa. He served on the Grand Prix Organising Committee at Kyalami for 16 years, and represented South Africa on FIM for 12 years, and brought motorcycle and motor-cross Grands Prix to South Africa.
