Guest Speaker, Freek Robinson has been a journalist all his working life – 41 years in television and 25 years as news and current affairs anchor. 
His career as TV journalist started with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) in 1975 when TV was introduced in South Africa. One of his first assignments as field journalist was to cover the Soweto riots in June 1976. He steadily progressed through the ranks as political reporter, current affairs producer, current affairs executive producer, head of current affairs in the parliamentary team of the SABC and political correspondent. 
 
In 1988 he was appointed European correspondent based in London. After three years he returned as executive producer and anchor of a new TV current affairs programme, Agenda.  He conducted many interviews, chaired debates and panel discussions on the Codesa talks (the negotiations to write a new inclusive constitution for a democratic South Africa). In the run-up to the first democratic elections in 1994 he facilitated several live broadcasts countrywide of political town meetings where political parties had to explain their policies to audiences of a thousand people or more. Freek also chaired the Mandela/De Klerk debate. It was reportedly broadcast to a TV audience of 800 million people. He was one of the studio anchors on the election days and during the results broadcasts. 
 
In 1995 he was appointed editor of TV current affairs – by request only on a temporary basis. A year later he went back to practical journalism as executive producer and anchor of a new current affairs programme Focus. In addition he was later appointed as the talk show host of a radio current affairs programme on RSG.
 
In 2008 he moved into corporate management in the SABC as manager stakeholder relations. After two years he was asked to be the anchor of new current affairs programme “Robinson Regstreeks” (Robinson live) on the satellite channel, kykNET. Later in 2010 he was approached to be main anchor of the nightly news at seven of the independent South African free to air channel eTV. This broadcast is in, Afrikaans, and aired on the satellite channel kykNET. 
 
Awards received include: 
 
- The Sanlam Award as best financial journalist on Radio and TV in 1997 for a report on the economies of the South East Asian countries. (This award from one of the largest financial institutions in South Africa, is the most prestigious award for financial journalists in the country.) 
- The Artes Award as best SABC television presenter in 1992.
- The Star Tonight Award (twice) as best actuality producer.(This was an award from an independent newspaper group.)  
- ATKV (a countrywide cultural organisation) award as best television actuality presenter in 1999 and again in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016.
- ATKV award for best radio actuality presenter 2008, 2010 and 2011.
- SABC news award as best current affairs presenter 2007. 
 
Additional information:
Freek has lectured on a regular basis on invitation at several universities such as the University of Johannesburg, Stellenbosch, Cape Town, Free State, North West, Rhodes and Pretoria. 
 
During his journalism career he travelled extensively to cover news and produce documentaries – in South Africa and abroad including reports on economic and political issues in the USA, Europe, Russia, Brazil, Argentina, Chilli, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Angola, Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, China and Australia.  
 
Qualifications:
- MPhil in Journalism, the University of Stellenbosch.
- Honours Degree in Literature, University of Pretoria.
- Diploma in Senior Management, University of Stellenbosch Business School.
- Certificate as a Trained Trainer in Television presentation from the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association.
- Certificate in television presentation skills, Thompson Foundation (UK).
