John Martin retired from the S.A. Navy in 1990 with the rank of Commander.

17 years of Service, with many honours and awards including, Chief of the Defence Force Commendation Medal for Outstanding Seamanship and Leadership; Chief of the Navy Commendation for Seamanship and Leadership; 10 Year Good Service Medal; S.A. Defence Force Sportsman of the Year, S.A. Navy Sportsman of the Year – 5 times.

During his ocean racing career of some 20 years, John Martin skippered famous yachts such as Voortrekker and Allied Bank achieving notable success in 6 Transatlantic Races – Solo or Double-Handed (for many years, the holder of the all time East West Record for a Monohull) ; Two Round the World Single-Handed Races, winning three legs; Springbok colours – 9 times; State President’s Sports Award (Gold) twice; Yachtsman of the Year – twice; three times winner of the Gordon Burnwood Trophy for Outstanding Yachting Achievements in South Africa.

John has sailed in excess of 350,000 miles, 80,000 miles Single-Handed, enjoys rugby and motor sport, is married and has three children. He is a member of the Seven Seas Officers Club; Royal Cape Yacht Club; Kelvin Grove; Honorary Life Membership at False Bay Yacht Club. He is also a SA Sailing Yacht Skipper Examiner.

He was instrumental in setting up the Development Sailing Training Programme for the SA Navy six years ago. He was awarded the SA Defence Force Sports Personality of the Year, and the SA Navy Sports Award (Gold) for his contribution to Navy Sailing.

He continues to campaign for Youth Development in Sailing at Royal Cape Yacht Club. John runs a Maritime Consultancy which includes Trials Captain on various commercial vessels and he is also the Captain of Inala, an exclusive charter vessel which offers personalized private tours to Robben Island.
