Executive Director of the Tshepang Trust, Dr. Kgosi Letlape is the president of the African Medical Association, former chairperson of the South African Medical Association (SAMA) and past president of the World Medical Association (WMA), the global representative body for physicians worldwide.
Letlape made history by becoming the first black person to qualify as an ophthalmologist in South Africa during the apartheid years, and was the first black person to be elected as WMA President. His interest in health care for South Africans sees him participating in various health committees and task teams. In 2002, Dr. Kgosi Letlape, touched by the rape of baby Tshepang, embarked on an ambitious project towards providing access to antiretroviral treatment to HIV positive patients.
Together with Dr. Nelson Mandela, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the South African Medical Association (SAMA), he spearheaded the establishment of the Tshepang Trust, which facilitates the treatment of HIV positive patients. This project for Dr. Letlape means a better life and a future for those who are on treatment and eventually improved efforts at Prevention of HIV infections. The Tshepang Trust is a foundation dedicated to improve the management of HIV /AIDS in South Africa, with Dr. Nelson Mandela as its patron.
Dr. Letlape is a golf enthusiast and is married to Mpho Letlape with four children.
