Guest Speaker, Jonathan Isaac Kaplan (born 7 November 1966 in Durban, South Africa), is a former international rugby union referee who holds the record for the most international matches as referee.

He matriculated in 1984 at King David Linksfield with distinctions in History and Geography. He got a B Soc Sci majoring in Economics and Psychology from UCT (87-90) and did a post grad degree in marketing management at UNISA (1990).
 
Jonathan has worked for a few multinationals most notable of which was Nike as assistant to the Marketing Director . Started a Transport business with his family in 1993 which they sold in 2003. Jonathan became one of the first batch of professional referees in SA in 1998, a position which he held until his retirement in 2013.
 
Jonathan's list of achievements in that sphere are as follows:
 
- most capped international rugby referee of all time (70 tests)
- first referee to achieve the milestone of 100 Super rugby matches including 3 Finals
- most capped referee in Currie Cup history (161) including 6 Finals 
- refereed more 6 nations matches than anyone else (18) and more Bledisloe Cup matches (8) too
- went to 4 Rugby World Cups 1999,2003,2007,2011 refereeing a total of 13 matches ( SA record ) 
- served on the SA panels for 21 years ( a record )
- SA referee of the year 5 times ( another record )
 
Jonathan has written 2 books, both in 2014, the first of which (Call it like it is) was launched in June 2014 and became a best seller in 10 days. The second book titled (Always believe in Magic) is also a best seller and was written in conjunction with Prof Tim Noakes and UCT head coach Kevin Musikanth. Jonathan is also a sought after guest speaker on the professional and conference speaking circuit, and many of the topics in his two books form the basis of his talks. 
 
Having been a brand ambassador for a few organizations and charities in the last few years, including 'Blow the Whistle', Erke, Asics, Seartec and more recently FNB, he has been involved in a variety of events for them, ranging from appearances to talks aimed at clients, potential clients and their staff.
 
Kaplan's website 'RateTheRef.co.za' for which he provides regular content, his Twitter account and his facebook page boast a high number of followers, always eager to hear his views, thoughts and opinions on the latest games or updates in the rugby arena. 
 
His hobbies and interests include road running (his central focus at the moment) and marathons of which he has completed 73 marathons and ultras thus far (incl eight 2 Oceans and 9 Comrades).
 
Jonathan has been on a variety of sports programs including 'Boots and All' and magazine style shows like 'The Dan Nicholl Show' and 'Toks n Tjops'. He recently won Speedstars Season 1 which was flighted for 4 months on DSTV.
