Guest Speaker Debora Patta is a respected international broadcaster covering Africa, Middle East and other conflict zones around the world. She is currently a Foreign Correspondent for CBS News. Her career spans radio and television as both an on-air newswoman and a senior editorial manager.
She began working in radio freelancing for the BBC and in 1990 started at a popular Johannesburg based talk radio station 702. She is particularly well-known for her coverage of Nelson Mandela during his election campaign as South Africa’s first black president. He used to call her “his favourite journalist.”
Patta moved to independent free-to-air television station e.tv in 1998 where she was Editor-in-Chief of e.news launching the country’s first 24hr TV channel and mentoring a generation of reporters. Patta was also the host and Executive Producer of Third Degree for 13 years – a no-holds barred investigative current affairs programme and terror to the corrupt and powerful.
Since 2013 Patta has worked as a foreign correspondent for CBS News covering Africa and breaking stories around the globe. Her reports include terror attacks in Europe and Africa; the fall of Aleppo, Syria; the death of Nelson Mandela; the 2014 Ebola outbreak; famine in South Sudan; the kidnap of schoolgirls by Boko Haram in Nigeria; the ambush of US soldiers in Niger; conflict zones in Somalia, Niger, Cameroon, Nigeria, Burkino Faso, Mali and the DRC; child cobalt mining in the DRC ; Ebola and War in the DRC, the Ethiopian boeing plane crash; the Hong Kong protests and most recently the Covid-19 pandemic in Asia and Africa.
She is a multi-award winning journalist and a two time Emmy nominee – these awards include the Vodacom Media Woman of the Year SA, South Africa’s Most Influential Woman in Media SA, MTN’s Outstanding Women in Media SA, Italy’s Woman of the World , the Edward R Murrow award, the NABJ Salute To Excellence, a Scripps Howard award for broadcast excellence and the prestigious US Free Expression Awards.
Patta has co-authored two books Baby Micaela and One Step Behind Mandela. She is an avid runner and yogi, the proud mother of two independent minded daughters who live with her and her life partner Andrew Levy.
