Freshlyground

Freshlyground formed in early 2002 and is made up of seven talented and diverse musicians from South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. Fronted by the dynamic Zolani Mahola, the band exudes a vibrant live performance energy that has been central to their success. In 2010, with their already gold-certified fourth studio album, “Radio Africa,” Freshlyground broadcast their unique sound to audiences across the continent and around the world, cementing their place as one of South Africa’s most treasured acts.

The band put the finishing touches on “Radio Africa” in New York in February 2010, and were selected to co-perform the Official Song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Entitled “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” the song features on “Listen Up: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album™” and is a collaboration with Colombian superstar Shakira. Freshlyground performed “Waka Waka” live at both the FIFA Kick-Off Concert and the World Cup Final between Spain and the Netherlands, which was broadcast to over a billion viewers worldwide. To date, “Waka Waka” has sold well over 3 million singles, reached number one on multiple charts globally, and remains the most successful anthem in FIFA World Cup history. The song introduced Freshlyground and their music to a vast international audience.

The band’s experienced rhythm section of Peter Cohen (drums) and Josh Hawks (bass) is complemented by guitarist Julio Sigauque, keyboardist Seredeal Scheepers, Simon Attwell (flute, mbira, saxophone, and harmonica), and violinist Kyla-Rose Smith.
