Guest Speaker Roger Horrocks is an internationally acclaimed wildlife cinematographer, documentary filmmaker, and visual storyteller, renowned for capturing some of the world’s most extraordinary moments beneath the ocean’s surface. His award-winning work has featured in globally celebrated productions including My Octopus Teacher, Our Planet, and Blue Planet II, earning him international recognition for his exceptional cinematography.
Specialising in underwater wildlife filmmaking, Roger has worked with leading broadcasters and production companies including National Geographic, the BBC, and Disney, documenting the natural world from the frozen polar regions to tropical oceans. His contribution to Blue Planet II earned him a BAFTA for Outstanding Cinematography, cementing his reputation as one of the world’s leading wildlife cinematographers.

In this talk, Roger shares the incredible backstory behind the Oscar-winning documentary My Octopus Teacher, from his perspective as the Director of Photography on the project and a long-time collaborator with Craig Foster. He also shares his unique take on what the film is actually about, and why it has so much to teach us about life on our planet.

Along with Didier Noirot, Roger was one of the first people to film Nile Crocodiles underwater in the papyrus caves of the Okavango Delta in Botswana. In this talk, Roger shares what it was like to dive with these calculating predators for the first time, and how he overcame his claustrophobia and fear of dying in the process.
