Book Guest Speaker Stephen McGown – International Keynote Speaker on Resilience, Mindset & Overcoming Adversity. A powerful story of survival, perspective, and the strength of the human spirit.
Stephen McGown was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and built an early career in finance, working both locally and internationally, including several years in London.
In 2011, while travelling through Africa on a long-held dream to explore the continent by motorcycle, Stephen’s journey took an unexpected and life-altering turn. He was abducted in Mali and held captive in the Sahara Desert for nearly six years, one of the longest-held surviving hostages of Al-Qaeda. During this time, Stephen was removed entirely from his previous life and placed in an environment defined by uncertainty, isolation, and extreme conditions. With limited communication and no control over his circumstances, he faced the daily challenge of survival – both physically and mentally.
What emerged from this experience was not just endurance, but a profound understanding of mindset. Stephen recognised that while he could not control his situation, he could control his response to it. This decision – to focus on attitude, presence, and perspective, became the foundation of his resilience.
Since his release in 2017, Stephen has dedicated himself to sharing his story in a way that offers meaning and value to others. His keynote presentations are not about the details of captivity, but about the lessons learned, lessons that apply directly to individuals and organisations navigating pressure, change, and uncertainty. His message is both simple and powerful:
Freedom is an attitude.
Why book Stephen:
Stephen’s personal story is not only remarkable but deeply relevant to the challenges individuals and organisations face today.
Presentations by Stephen Mcgown
Freedom Is an Attitude
Stephen shares a message of making the most of all situations whether they are good or bad. Even though Stephen's story is far removed from the reality of most people's lives, the essence of his struggles are not far off from those of his audience. His talk promises to inspire and leave his audience questioning their own attitude and dilemmas.
Stephen's talk is a story about resilience and overcoming adversity amidst harsh weather conditions, a different culture, language and religion. He talks about making important decisions, about the importance of acceptance, communication and building trust. He shares a concept that freedom is an attitude.
"If I was not going to be killed, then I needed to use this time productively and come back a better person. After all, the biggest tragedy would have been to have wasted my 5 years 8 months in the desert, to come back angry having learnt nothing. I had to make the most of my time!"
He is the perfect choice for a keynote speaker and will set the perfect tone for your event.
