Guest Speaker John Walland was born in Port Elizabeth and a product of Grey High School.
John has a Sales and Marketing background and has extensive experience in the pharmaceutical industry specialising in anaesthetic products working in corporate with Janssen Pharmaceutica and Johnson & Johnson Medical. He followed his lifelong passion to be involved in the electronic media and joined 5fm in 1989 on a freelance basis presenting news and sport. In 1994 he joined on a permanent basis worked alongside numerous top radio presenters, where his banter and humour makes him a popular personality.
John has presented, produced and set up sports interviews during Nashua Sports Trax, which commanded a huge following, and during his tenure built up and excellent relationships with many sporting personalities both locally and internationally. He was appointed Sports Anchor on SABC 2’s AM Today Breakfast Show in 1999 and has also appeared on Mnet’s Super Saturday as a Sports Show Participant. He worked on the Supersport Blitz Channel presenter commentating on all live events broadcast across the station’s sport’s channels and also works on Hot 1027fm sports anchor having won multiple SA Radio Awards recognised for his sporting presentation and extensive networks in the industry.
John left 5fm and joined Jo’burgs no 1 hit music station 94.7 Highveld Stereo in 2003 as a Sports Presenter and worked with numerous personalities including Bob Mabena and Alex Jay. During his tenure with 94.7 Highveld Stereo he has also become well known for his good humour and banter on Wackhead Simpson’s Prank calls. He left Highveld Stereo on a positive note to further gain experience in the industry and joined Jacaranda FM in January 2008 as a sports presenter and did interviews with local and international sporting personalities for the KFC Sports Cage.
John also MC’s and makes guest appearances at various corporate and private functions. His extensive sports knowledge and good sense of humour and love of puns make the occasion memorable.
As well as being a Guest Speaker, he is also a stadium and sports events announcer and DJ at corporate functions including stints at the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City. He also has the reputation of being a great 'party maker' when he Dj’s at weddings, birthdays and parties.
A keen sportsman he has completed 10 Comrades Marathons - permanent number 927, 11 Two Oceans Ultra Marathon’s - permanent number 402, 8 London Marathon’s, 6 New York Marathons, 2 Iron Man Triathlons, 12 Argus Cycle tours and 6 94.7 Cycle Challenges. He is also a brand ambassador to Scott Sports Cycling, also Garmin Navworld and currently a keen cyclist and Bounty rebound participant with Lisa Raleigh’s bounty.

Known for his humour and quips, John Walland is a veteran sports journalist with an extensive rapport with top sporting personalities making him one of South Africa’s most liked radio favourites for nearly 35 years.
In that time, he has literally interviewed thousands of sportsmen and women, both locally and internationally as well as prominent individuals such as former President Nelson Mandela, boxing legends George Foreman and Mike Tyson, Rugby World cup winning captains Francois Pienaar, John Smit, Renowned SA cricketers in AB De Villiers, Jacques Kallis, and the late Hansie Cronje, to name but a few.
