Guest Speaker Jaco Sadie shares his passion about all things wine related - "I've been fortunate to spend over 35 years in the wine industry, both at locally and abroad. It all started in Stellenbosch, South Africa, where I grew up. With vineyards all around and a culture steeped in winemaking, it was almost impossible not to fall in love with the world of wine.
To deepen my understanding, I took my passion overseas, spending six months in Umbria, Italy, studying wines and food. After that, I spent time in France, living in the beautiful regions of Languedoc-Roussillon and Entre-Deux-Mers, where I dove deeper into oenology. These experiences really opened my eyes to the art and science of winemaking, helping me appreciate the nuances that go into every bottle.
But my journey didn’t stop in Europe. I spent eight incredible years in Colorado, USA, where I studied wine and consumer psychology. During this time, I hosted countless wine tasting events, sharing what I’d learned with others and getting to know what people really look for in a glass of wine. This period was especially important as it shaped my understanding of consumer habits and trends, particularly when it comes to wine as an investment in the later years.
Alongside consulting on these trends, I’ve had the pleasure of presenting wines and hosting talks on international stages. I love making the complexities of wine accessible and engaging, which is why I also appear weekly on local radio as the resident wine specialist.
A big milestone in my recent career was co-founding WYN, a retail wine store and brand based in Somerset West, South Africa. My experience with vitification, vinification, and wine brand development has been crucial in building and growing this venture.
