First job ever: Cleaner in an animal feeds factory
Worst job: As above and standing on a roof in Cape Town for three hours, talking about the IPL motorcade to no one on particular.
CareerHighlights: On a magical day in May 1979 I took 9 for 27 playing for the Post Office against Mangotsfield in Bristol. For the one and only time in my life the ball swung either way at my behest. Life has never been so pleasant since. Oh, hang-on, you’re talking about in broadcasting....Commentating with Bill McLaren at Ellis Park, with Trevor Bailey at Lords, 10 years of fun with Neil Andrews and Terry Paine on Super Saturday, and any time when all the tentacles of an outside broadcast production combine to make everyone look good.
General Best character traits: The things I inherited from my mother: an equable temperament and a rather odd sense of humour
Sports achievements: I once bowled a dot ball to Sunil Gavaskar at SuperSport Park. I was playing for the South African Press and he was playing for the Indian Press. After that dot ball he steered me to third man for a single and then Yashpal Sharma heaved me three times onto the grass bank. I once hit a golf ball 400metres: it was on a par five dogleg right at Centurion Country Club. As my ball landed 250 metres from the tee, a sprinkler head sprang out of the ground and catapulted it a further 150 metres. Then I missed the green and four putted for bogey from the fringe.
