Profile:
It’s incredibly rare that an artist can come along, stay true to their personality, write music from the heart and flirt with genres as effortlessly as multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter Matthew Mole.
Evolved without compromise, the ‘indie kid’ that shyly emerged 8 years ago has walked paths that have ultimately led him to become one of the biggest pop names in South Africa. Yet there is a distinct feeling that his musical career has only just begun to show its true potential.
With hit after hit, a perfectly curated, humorous, yet slick aesthetic to his stage shows, videos and branding, he has all the makings of a megastar – with the humility and grace of the boy next door.
Boasting three full-length, original albums under his belt, one live album and a cover version EP, Matthew’s award-winning repertoire has all the gravitas of a committed artiste. As relentless on the touring circuit as the recording studio, his live shows have become famous for being high-energy, ‘leave it all on the stage’ full-blown sonic experiences, as he effortlessly combines his multi-instrumentalism with loops and an outstanding vocal range.
Matthew Mole’s fan-base ranges from teenagers to hipsters, from respected musical peers to your mom, and everyone in between. The reason is simple – song-writing credibility. With continuous dedication to his personal growth as a musician, the list of instruments he plays on his albums and on stage just keeps growing.
He is fully adept at guitar, piano, ukulele, drums and much more. A thoughtful and articulate lyricist, Matthew refuses to compromise on the value of songs carrying a strong message. He has penned words that can make one think, laugh, cry or do all three at the same time. With the use of positivity and the true desire to be as genuine as possible, Matthew writes with no bravado, no smoke and mirrors - just completely cool, honest songs every modern-day human can relate to.
Matthew has chosen to be candid in his song-writing with regards to his own life experiences - the very events and people audiences have watched shape him over the years into the musician he is today. To know his music is to know the man, and that is just one of the reasons his fans adore him and effortlessly connect.
The awards and accolades Matthew has won over the years mean less to him than the connection between his people – namely his wife Jess, his friends and family and Lily, his dog. But one has to make mention of how highly-esteemed this 28-year old has become in such a short space of time.
Falling in love with his vocation took hold of Matthew Mole as a young boy, but no one was expecting the maturity and wholly thought-out offering that was his first official album release, ‘The Home We Built’ in 2013. With a path and vision forged into his mind, the resulting singles and iTunes success paved the way for his 2016 album, ‘Run’.
Where ‘The Home We built’ created a nice underground movement, ‘Run’ took Matthew to heights he hadn’t yet foreseen. Topping the iTunes chart was just the start and the album went on to being nominated for 3 highly acclaimed South African Music Awards for Best Pop Album, Best Produced Album and the most sought-after accolade of the awards, Record Of The Year.
His name had dropped, his voice was heard, and Matthew’s music began taking over the world. With an incredible international following thanks to his web outreach, Matthew began to headline major festivals on the SA music circuit. He was the support act for The Fray and Bastille on their SA tours and hopped planes to perform in London, Seattle, Los Angeles, Thailand, Russia and others.
By 2019 Matthew Mole had established himself as one of South Africa’s most developed and respected pop artists. Musically evolving on the daily, by the time November that year had rolled around, he had dropped his most personal and indeed, brilliant album to date – ‘Ghost’, and swiftly scooped up the South African Music Award for Best Pop Album.
With a larger sound in terms of instrumentation, Matthew’s stage act grew to compliment the progression to the point where his mind-blowing shows required larger venues to cater for the fans. ‘Ghost’ saw such a successful touring schedule that the breath-taking moments on stage begged documentation. ‘Ghost Live’ became the organic choice – a live album of some of the highlight moments from life on the road with Matthew and his band.
And at the height of an explosive career run, the world suddenly demanded some quiet reflection in the form on a global lockdown.
For Matthew, one of the benefits of the 2020 Covid19 lockdown was the opportunity to forge even deeper connections with his fans – a part of the job he has always held in the highest regard.
Taking time to welcome fans into his home life, song-creation process and even his marriage, he opened up in the most remarkably quirky and funny ways, using the medium of the internet as a doorway to connection.
Matthew also reached out to fans to collaborate with him on a song. While not having any particular high hopes for the musicality of the project, he was shocked at the response. This unique call-to-action requested fans to submit singing or dancing for the single ‘Let Me’, but what emerged became one of the most stunning insights into how much Matthew is loved and respected world-wide.
Fans and musicians from across the globe submitted footage of themselves, singing or playing various musical instruments in a collaborative effort alongside Matthew’s simple vocal track. The end result was touching, surprisingly filled with talent and leaves viewers full of goosebumps and all the right feels.
Always looking for the light at the end of the tunnel, Matthew has been surprisingly busy in lockdown. Recording a cover EP of some of the most requested fan tracks, he released ‘Honey, I’m Home’, followed by a series of highly personal ‘home’ concerts, allowing people deep into his personal space. As well as a live album release with tracks from the Number 1 album ‘Ghost’, Matthew took the quiet time to collaborate with long-time musical friend, Francois Van Coke.
A legendary rock star in the South African music world meeting one of the biggest names in pop was pure genius – and the resulting single ‘Fall’ is nothing short of breath-taking.
Speaking directly to our struggles through song, the message on ‘Fall’ is relatable and holds a deep spirit of unity. Written between the two musicians in different cities in a lockdown situation didn’t prevent a beautiful marriage of chemistry, resulting in an uplifting powerhouse of a song that seemed to drop when fans needed to hear it most.
An artist at the peak of his career, there seems to be no slow down for Matthew Mole. Amidst the chaos of artistic struggles worldwide in 2020, he has persevered, honed his craft and used the opportunity to bring focus to his music through quirky, alternative and refreshing ways. With a brand-new project in the pipeline, Matthew is hard at work in his home studio writing and tweaking what is guaranteed to be an even bigger and more mature Matthew Mole album in the near future.
An artist with his proverbial ‘head screwed on right’, Matthew Mole continues to shine bright, bringing us that love and light through song, performance and all the right messages.
