PLATFORM JAZZ
"Platform Jazz", an 8-piece Dixieland band, plays authentic 1920’s toe-tapping jazz. Included in their repertoire of well-known songs are Fats Waller favourites ‘I’m going sit right down and write myself a letter’, ‘Honeysuckle Rose’ and traditional tunes such as ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’, ‘Chicago’ and ‘When the saints go marching in’ and many more.
The line-up consists of trumpet, clarinet, sax, trombone, double bass, drums and piano / keyboard and vivacious female vocalist. They also play jazz standards and some Latin numbers. “Platform Jazz” has been in existence for 26 years, and has played for many functions including weddings, parties, opening of Hotel Izulu in Ballito, functions and corporates at the ICC, concerts at the Playhouse, restaurant functions including BBB, Art Scene, NSA gallery, and the Jazz Centre at UND, and several events at Suncoast and Wild Coast casinos and Zimbali. The band plays regularly in Pietermaritzburg for Music Revival concerts and has performed at the Hilton College theatre and for the Hilton Festival. “Platform Jazz” has a great following on the Hibiscus Coast where they have played at the Harding fair, the Umdoni Retirement centre at Pennington and several times at the Village of Happiness in Margate. Their performances are normally sold out and receive a standing ovations.
Band members are:
1.Cathy Peacock (Band Leader)on trumpet who is a full time professional trumpet player with the KZN Philharmonic orchestra. Cathy also teaches and helps run the KZN Youth Orchestra.
2. Kirsten Sayers on clarinet - also a full time member with the KZNPO, who also teaches clarinet in her spare time.
3.Duncan Wooldridge on trombone - yet another member of KZNPO and teacher of the trombone.
4. Jeff Robinson on alto sax who has played with a number of professional jazz bands and is a retired lecturer from UKZN.
5. Andreas Kappen on double bass. Also from the KZNPO and he teaches bass at UKZN.
6. Bruce Baker on drums. Freelance drummer around Durban with various jazz ensembles and Christian groups, he teaches at Durban music school and UKZN. Alternates with Stef , the drummer with the KZNPO.
7. Calli Thomson on piano. Accomplished pop, rock & jazz pianist originally from Cape Town, now living in Durban. Performs at prominent Durban theatres such as Rockwood, Barnyard, Sneddon, Heritage as well as ad hoc with the KZNPO.
8. Shelley McLean is the gorgeous velvet voiced vocalist. A well-known entertainer in Durban, Shelley appeared at the Barnyard for a number of years and now teaches piano and vocals. She is a regular performer at the Tall Ships at the Elangeni hotel and has sung with the KZNPO for a number of concerts.
