Guest Speaker, Wayne describes himself as an entrepreneur, activist, writer, change agent, and family man, all harbored in one eager soul.
Schooled in Kwa-Zulu Natal and a B.Sc graduate from University of Natal, the bulk of Wayne’s working experience has been in the Travel, Tourism and Transport sector. Having served as the Chief Executive at Avis between 2007 and 2012, he also filled board member functions at the SA Vehicle Renting & Leasing Association (SAVRALA) and Tourism Business Council of SA (TBCSA) during this period.
Wayne was a founding member and Chairperson of OUTA - which began as the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance - since its inception in February 2012. In that same year, he decided to exit the corporate world to provide the necessary attention and time to develop OUTA’s functions and effectiveness as a civil action organization, specifically at that time to challenge Government’s e-Toll policy decision.
In 2016, with a broader vision and mandate for the organisation, Wayne assumed the role of CEO, and under its new name (Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse - OUTA), the entity expanded role in tackling public sector maladministration, corruption and the abuse of authority, taking the organisation to new heights to regarded as one of South Africa’s leading civil activism organisations in South Africa
Wayne is married with three children.
His most loved quote, is by the late Tyree Scott (USA activist) who once said “It’s generally problematic to leave the people who created a problem, in charge of finding the solution.”

The fight and successful citizen campaign to end e-Tolls
This talk unpacks what went wrong with Government's eToll plan in Gauteng, which under normal circumstances and environments, is a workable scheme. Why was the scheme destined to fail and how sheer arrogance and political stubbornness triggered the birth of a civil disobedience campaign, which put paid to a massive money racketeering scheme.
OUTA's journey - from a single campaign to a formidiable corruption fighting entity
This talk incorporates some of the above (etoll fight issue), but speaks to how and why OUTA broadened its mandate beyond the single eToll issue in 2016, 4-years after it set out in 2012 to put a stop to the eToll debacle. The strategy undertaken by OUTA to do civil activism unusual, why it was necessary and unpacks some of the aspects and modus operandi of corruption in SA. This is a story about hope and what can be achieved, when you use the constitution and throw some moral courage, tenacity and resilience into the mix.
In the absence of effective government and declining service delivery, is civil society is the solution to address many challenges we face in SA
This talk speaks to the trigger points for civil activism, and how the role of organised civil society can make a difference in holding Government to account. It also includes the activation of local communities when it comes to fixing municipalities, metros and the places we live and invest in.
The role of business in changing South Africa
Why is business largely absent when it comes to addressing and challenging a failing state? What should or can business do to play their part in staving off a failed state? Wayne gives and overview of what how effective corporate citizenry look like and why it is essential to go beyond the boundaries of business as usual. We are no ordinary country and we need extra-ordinary interventions to address our challenges.
Electoral reform, politics and the road to 2024 elections.
2024 is being regarded as the next shift change for South Africa's future. The most meaningful opportunity to change the trajectory of a democratic nation, is best done through the ballot box. But how do we tackle the hurdles of voter apathy and what is possible after three decades of a single party dominance. Is coalition politics able to bring about meaningful change? Why a tax revolt is the worst option for SA.
